Join us to hear readings by Lydia Millet and Terese Svoboda for the release of Great American Desert: Stories (UC, $21.95), a poetic collection of desert-inspired stories by Terese Svoboda. This lyrical collection spans the misadventures of the prehistoric Clovis people to the wanderings of a forlorn couple around a pink pyramid in a sci-fi prairie. In her arresting and inimitable style, Svoboda’s delicate handling of the complex dynamics of family and self seeps into every sentence of these first-rate short stories about what we do to the world around us— and what it can do to us.
Terese Svoboda is the award-winning author of seventeen books of prose, poetry, memoir, translation, biography, and fiction. She has taught at the Center for Fiction in New York City and has been a recipient of the Pushcart Prize.
Pulitzer Prize finalist Lydia Millet is known for her dark humor, idiosyncratic characters, and interest in the relationship between humans and other animals. She is the author of Fight No More: Stories (Norton, $24.95) and many other award-winning novels.
