Join us to hear Kisha Lewellyn Schlegel, author of Fear Icons: Essays (Mad Creek, $19.95).

Winner of the inaugural Gournay Prize, Fear Icons uses iconic figures from Donald Trump to Liberace to ask: Who are we to each other when we’re afraid? Each essay is woven through with other voices, from Baldwin to Du Bois, positioning Schlegel's arguments and meditations within a diverse and dynamic literary lineage. Fear Icons is a vital and timely inquiry into the complex relationship between love and fear— and the ways that each intensifies the other.

Kisha Schlegel’s award-winning essays have appeared in The Iowa Review, Tin House, and more. A graduate of the University of Montana's Environmental Studies Program and the University of Iowa's Nonfiction Writing Program, she now teaches creative writing at Whitman College.
