Alan Stern
, author of Chasing New Horizons: Inside the Epic First Mission to Pluto (St. Martin’s, $28).

In 2006, NASA launched the interplanetary space probe New Horizons in a project led by engineer and planetary scientist Alan Stern. The spacecraft would travel over three billion miles from earth, made possible by over two decades of work by a legion of devoted scientists. Despite readers’ awareness of their ultimate success, Stern and co-author David Grinspoon manage to make the mission’s many technical and bureaucratic roadblocks into a thrilling narrative. The team’s diligence and creativity paid off spectacularly when, in 2015, New Horizons flew by Pluto at 32,000 miles per hour and transmitted spectacular images back to Earth, reawakening a dormant public fascination with space exploration and dramatically increasing scientific knowledge.

Dr. Alan Stern is a planetary scientist, space program executive, aerospace consultant and author. He has been involved in 24 space missions and served on various NASA committees, has developed multiple scientific instruments for planetary and near-space research missions, and has been listed among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. Stern was recently inducted into the Colorado Space Hall of Fame and is also the co-founder of Uwingu, a company that allows the public to nominate names for exoplanets and craters of Mars.

"When the New Horizons spacecraft flew from here to Pluto and beyond, the pictures and data forever changed the way we view our Solar System and our place within it. Stern and Grinspoon show us what NASA can do when the United States brings its best. New Horizons is still flying, and for us Plutophiles it's the adventure of a lifetime."

Bill Nye, science educator, CEO of the Planetary Society
