I love to read fiction, especially if the characters are quirky and real. I adore children's literature, picture books in particular. I'm also an avid reader of psychology and parenting books, and I will always read anything involving a runaway food item, such as a pie or a pickle.

This is a clever, fast-paced, highly creative read for children and adults. It will challenge your brainpower as you take the "tests" along with the children being considered for membership in the "Society." Part mystery and part adventure, The Mysterious Benedict Society is truly a celebration of the misfit in all of us.

I don't typically read historical fiction, but once I picked this one up I was hooked. It is plot driven and filled with suspense -- a great vacation or beach read. Most impressive is Philippa Gregory's extensive research. She provides an intriguing window into an unfamiliar time period and way of life. Very fun read.

This novel is both beautiful and sad but also has a kind of joy. It's about how a dream of a better life -- whether it's a promised land or a more palatable spouse -- can both sustain you and, ultimately, destroy the beauty of what you already have. The characters are mesmerizing -- they at once repulse you and compel you and in the end you care deeply for them. This novel is deeply human.
