Female StoryTellers

Friday, October 6 at 7:00 PM

Local writers Mel Blumenthal, Bethany Evans, Noël Hennessey and Penelope Starr will share work from their new (and first) collection, Best of FST!: Female StoryTellers Anthology.

FST! Female StoryTellers was founded in 2012 as a way to empower women to share their stories and promote feminism and equality in the community. Though their primary mission is to provide women with a space to speak freely, FST! also donates a portion of profits to local organizations for women, children and the arts.

Best of FST! features 37 passionate stories and commemorates the fifth anniversary of this unique Tucson institution, a monthly storytelling night where women, trans, and gender nonconforming folks are the stars.

Mel Blumenthal, a member of the executive board of FST!, is working to launch pilot programs to bring storytelling into public schools to empower the next generation of tellers of tales. She is the Vice President of the Advocacy Council for the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona.

Bethany Evans is a storyteller, writer, and stand-up comedian who has lived in Tucson since 2006. She has been on the FST! Female StoryTellers executive board since 2013, and currently serves as its Storytelling Chair.

Noël Hennessey is a member of the outstanding University of Arizona faculty, in both the College of Engineering and the College of Education. In her free time she writes for FST! and co-hosts a podcast called Smitten with Smut. One of her goals in writing is to tell survivors of domestic violence that they are not alone.

Penelope Starr is the founder and executive producer of Tucson’s Odyssey Storytelling Series and author of The Radical Act of Community Storytelling: Empowering Voices in Uncensored Events. Her time is divided between teaching storytelling workshops and writing. She will also be featured in the collection Inside and Out: Women’s Truths, Women’s Stories this fall.
