Sylvia Torti, author of Cages (Schaffner, $16.95)

Winner of the 2016 Nicholas Schaffner Award for Music in Literature. Cages, Sylvia Torti’s quietly moving second novel, takes a thought-provoking look at the complexity of birdsong and how it parallels human communication. Rich in natural description and sense of place, Cages is a complex interweaving of biological, philosophical and mystical themes, peopled by characters who must confront the emotional truths in their lives in order to be released from their own, individual cages.

Ecologist and writer Sylvia Torti currently serves as Dean of the Honors College at the University of Utah and is the Associate Director of the interdisciplinary collective Mapping Meaning, a project devoted to bringing together artists, scientists and scholars to explore questions of social, mental, and environmental ecology. Her writing addresses the question of whether science and the humanities can probe one another and potentially deepen our understanding of important human questions.
