Rae Paris, The Forgetting Tree

Friday, February 9 at 7:00pm
Rae Paris, author of The Forgetting Tree: A Rememory (Wayne State University Press, $18.99)

The unique “hybrid memoir” of California author Rae Paris is a perfect blend of prose, poetry, and images. Paris began work on this unique and thought-provoking collection in 2010 while traveling the United States, visiting sites of racial trauma, horror, and resistance. After the death of her father the following year, the fiction she had been writing gave way to poetry and short prose, and the need to tell her story became more pressing than ever. Heavily influenced by questions she’d long been considering about power, memory, and freedom, Paris argues for a deeper understanding of past and present so that we might imagine a more hopeful, sustainable, and loving future for Black lives.
