Poets Farid Matuk and David Buuck

Friday, April 6 at 7:00pm
Farid Matuk
, author of The Real Horse: Poems (
University of Arizona Press, $16.95), and David Buuck, author of Noise in the Face of (Roof Books, $16.95).

University of Arizona professor and acclaimed poet Farid Matuk’s second full-length collection of poems is a sustained address to the poet’s daughter that considers her position as a natural-born female citizen of the “First World” in juxtaposition with the poet’s experience as a once-undocumented immigrant of mixed ethnicity whose paternity is unavoidably implicated in patriarchy. Taking its cues from the child’s unapologetic disregard for things as they are, The Real Horse invites readers into a shared practice of thinking and feeling that interrogates the confounding intersections of gender, race, class, and national status not as abstract concepts but as foundational intimacies.

David Buuck is the co-founder and editor of Tripwire, a journal of poetics devoted to a counter-institutional exploration of radical and experimental modes of contemporary poetics, art, and cultural politics. Buuck lives in Oakland, California and teaches composition at Mills College. Noise in the Face of (Roof Books, $16.95) is a political poetry collection that searches the liminal space between the virtual and the real. Composed of nine poems written in Oakland during the early days of the Occupy Oakland movement, through the Bay Area protests in the wake of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and many, many others, Buuck writes with immediacy, using language that builds into righteous anger and exposes confusion that transforms into a sense of responsibility.

It is about the labor of standing together in the face of the exposed and learning to be there for one another.” –CAConrad
