Michael Tisserand,
author of Krazy: George Herriman, A Life in Black and White (Harper, $35).

Drawing on exhaustive original research, award-winning author Michael Tisserand brings to vivid life the little-understood yet widely influential journalist and cartoonist George Herriman in this New York Times 2017 Notable Book of the Year.

Known as “the Greek” for his olive complexion and curly hair, Herriman was actually African American, born to a prominent Creole family that hid its racial identity in the dangerous days of Reconstruction. After catapulting to fame in the early twentieth century with his comic strip, Krazy Kat, Herriman used his work to explore the human condition, creating a modernist fantasia inspired by southwestern landscapes and his experiences living in the shadowy borderlands of racial identity.
